INDEX A chiptune I made
The process of making a short chiptune I made

	1. Finding samples
This is the hardest part of making a song, or not.
For this song, I decided to steal some sounds from cave story
cave story is an interesting game, it has its own unique audio format and audio workstation. Anyways I picked 2 of these. Instrumetn 30 for the bass,
and some other one for the lead melody. All I do is record them in audacity

Actually I think these are somewhat basic waveforms that might be easy to make if I knew how exactly, iunno Now for percussion, I found a really nice snare and kick from a mod file, ill be using that. The song doesn't have a hihat, I'll add that later 2. USIng the DAW Now, to make the notes, I will use LMMS. A decent free daw This "audio file processor" will let us play the samples. But before we play the notes, we need to do ONE THING which is to add a "volume decay" you see right now, when we play a note it plays at a constant volume. This can get a little grating to the ears in this case usually when ou play a note, the volume starts high and then gets lower after you play a note I could have aldready done this in orgmaker or audacity, but to do it here, click on the envelope filter, turn the AMT knob up and adjust the HOLD and DECAY knob
bpm? who cares, just place the notes different for a different speed Anyways, thats all, now... 3. Placing the notes/making the song How does music work? Why do certain pitches in certain combinations and timings make us feel emotions? Nobody knows and nobody cares. I tried to learn not to be overanalytical However, in music theory, people describe something called "chord progressions". Which is a confusing term A chord is when you play several notes together. However, a sequence of notes is often "based on" or "related" to a chord To be honest I don't fully understand it. But whats important is the root note of the chord The bass usually starts on the root note of the chord. Often the bass plays nothing but the root note.
I decided to steal the chord progression from this very, cool song I heard I started with the bass which goes like this. I probably subconsciously copied this from somewhere but I don't know where. The bass plays the root note, then pauses shortly, then plays the fifth, I think? Sounds pretty cool.
The lead melody starts with a section that is a solo. I will show you a cool trick called a one channel echo. After placing the note, we place it again in a lower volume right after The green lines at the bottom let you adjust the volume of specific notes NOW after the bass and percussion kicks in, I play a quick chord and then some fast notes or something.
Look at this, I don't know what its called, but its a technique where you break up the note and quickly play a higher note to make it sound more interesting. You can hear this in a lot of songs, one popular example you might know is in jevil's theme from deltarune After, I play this sequence where it goes down three notes one after the other. I end up using this a lot when i make music Near the end of this section, there are some longer notes and thennnn... I change the bass into playing longer notes, and hopping between octaves I'm not too sure about making the song feel slower, I guess its an alright way to end it. The percussion is pretty basic, one snare for every 2 kicks, except i added some extra kicks Dwonload link to the song And thats it. Honestly, its not that great overall, I wish I could be better at it. But I wanted to share my process anyways and yes its not quite finished yet, I'll get to that
